A Virtual Tour of The City of WinnipegThe Forks in downtown WinnipegThe Forks, a natural meeting place at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, has been used as gathering place for hundreds of years. Like many early settlements, Winnipeg had it's start next to the busiest transportation corridors in the region, the two rivers. Today, the Forks are in the heart of the City and the area is still used as a gathering place during many of the celebrations held within the community. An examination of our map reveals that the roads and highways that connect to Winnipeg all seem to meet at the forks, like the spokes of a wheel meet at it's axis.
A look at this image reveals many characteristics of the city. The downtown core is just next to the forks and appears as a dark purple area. On this sunny day, even the shadows of some buildings are visible from over 700 kilometres above. Winnipeg is a beautifully treed city. Ringing the city's core are many neighbourhoods with tree lined streets. These are visible as areas with varying amounts of green and purple. I ask our guide about those bright yellow patterns and point out that there appear to be a lot of them in the area. Suggesting a quick ride down the Red River, its pointed out that I'll enjoy finding out just what these areas are.
