A Virtual Tour of The City of Winnipeg

The Winnipeg International Airport

Arriving over in Winnipeg on a beautiful summer's day we notice the airport runways beneath us surrounded by both agricultural fields and urban growth. The band combination used to create this poster results in some pretty colourful imagery. Exposed soils and dried grasses are in shades of red, healthy vegetation is green and urban areas appear in shades of purple. Learning a bit about the Landsat 7 ETM+ sensor and the manipulation of digital data can help to explain why things appear as they do.

We might wonder what those yellow patches are (at least the curious amongst us will). We'll go meet our friend and tour guide and hopefully, we'll get an explanation. So, off to meet our friend. When in Winnipeg, do as Winnipegers do. When it comes to meeting people the best place for that is the Forks, so let's go!
