A Virtual Tour of Winnipeg and the Beaches

Stonewall, Manitoba

"Tyndall stone" my friend tells me. Apparently, many buildings in Manitoba are built from Tyndall Stone excavated from a quarry a little east of town. Of course when these buildings were built, a 'little east of town' was quite a stretch then. My friend suggest we visit another quarry to the north of town with a similar history....Stonewall. In this image we see both the town of Stonewall and the limestone quarries that provided many of Winnipeg's industrial building materials.

Stonewall and the Quarrys

The quarries, appearing bright white are in stark contrast to the surrounding agricultural fields. Dark areas within the quarry are water filled depressions and I feel like a swim. My friend assures me not to panic, we'll get ourselves back to the Red, on a boat and make our way to the big lake, the mighty Lake Winnipeg. Sailing down the Red we arrive at a birder's paradise, this is the Red River's Delta
