A Virtual Tour of The Ottawa River

The City of Pembroke.

We start our tour of the Ottawa River in Pembroke, Ontario. In this image we can see the where the Indian River meets up with the Muskrat River prior to the Muskrat flowing into the mighty Ottawa. Picking up some supplies for our little trip we'll put in a canoe and start making our way down the river.

Pembroke Ontario

If you've ever been to Pembroke you'll know that the town really isn't purple as it appears in this image. The bright purple is due to the false colour representation of this urban environment. Roads and buildings strongly reflect energies in the red and infrared wavelengths resulting in these purple tones. Compare Pembroke with the downtown core of Ottawa. The data acquired by the Landsat Satellite also makes water appear dark blue to black in this three band combination since water doesn't reflect infrared light very well. The water might seem black in this image but it's all whitewater just downstream!! The rapids along Ile du Grand Calumet are some of the best whitewater rapids in North America.
