A Virtual Tour of The Ottawa River

Ottawa-Hull.

After making our way down from the forests of the Gatineau Hills we find ourselves in the heart of the National Capital Region. Ottawa and Hull have come a long way from the rowdy logging towns of the past. Today one can enjoy museums, fine dining, or just appreciate the architecture of the many historical buildings in the area. From the view 700 kilometres overhead one can see the bridges that connect the communities between Ontario and Quebec. A close examination of the image reveals many other interesting features.

Ottawa-Hull

The famous Rideau Canal enters the image in the southeast corner and after a right angled turn flows towards it's final locks between Parliment Hill and Major's Hill Park before entering into the Ottawa River. On July 1st, (two days before this image was acquired), Canada Day celebrations were held on the lawn at the front of the Centre Block, just south of the canal. Here, the lawn appears as a pale yellow oval patch adjacent to the downtown core of Ottawa. Ottawa is a well treed city as is evident by the amount of green in the neighbourhoods surrounding the downtown core. One can compare the forested areas of Leamy Park across the river in Hull, to the downtown core of Ottawa in order to get an idea of the range in tree cover in different areas within the image. Still, as mentioned before, the only way to really experience the area, or the whole Ottawa River is to come for a visit. With so many different attractions or activities you're bound to have a great time.
