A Virtual Tour of The National Capital RegionGolfing in The National Capital RegionWell, I might not be able to fill my empty stomach but I can sure eat up the fairways. I'm sure by now you've guessed that the yellow banana shaped features are the fairways of a golf course! In this case, we can see the Loch Marsh Golf Course in Kanata, Ontario. If you recall the airport image, then you'll remember that there are two courses near the airport, the Hunt Club and Highlands courses. I wonder what it's like to make that 30 foot put with a 747 screaming over your head!
If you were to examine the poster of the National Capital Region you would be able to pick out a whole bunch of golf courses. I counted over twenty within the image and I know there are more nearby, a regular golfer's paradise. Comparing one course to another you would see that some appear bright yellow, others a little more greenish and some yellow with reddish hues. The differences in appearance are due to the health of the grasses on the fairways. Some courses constantly water the grass so it's nice, thick, and healthy. Many other courses rely on Mother Nature for a good watering and occasionally the fairways become a little dried and stressed out. This can result in an appearance similar to some of the agricultural fields or even appear like the grassy surfaces near the airport. A quick trip to the Experimental Farm in urban Ottawa may help us see this better.
