A Virtual Tour of The National Capital Region

The Macdonald-Cartier International Airport.

We start our tour of the National Capital Region after arriving at the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport just south of Ottawa. Looking at the image we can see the two major runways at the airport with their respective taxiways parallel to the runways. The asphalt of the runways is in sharp contrast to the cement tarmacs, which appear as much brighter surfaces, adjacent to the terminal buildings. A second tarmac is part of the Canadian Forces Base Uplands, which itself is a neighbour to the Ottawa Flying Club which utilizes the smaller runways to the east.

The grassy fields of the airport property (in rusty tones) are in sharp contrast to the green forested areas nearby, to that fuzzy white thing associated with a similar shaped black object, or to those banana shaped yellow patches. The data acquired by the Landsat Satellite in this band combination also makes water appear dark blue to black, urban areas purple, and dried grassy areas in shades of pink. If you wonder what those white and yellow features are just keep on touring!
