A Virtual Tour of The National Capital RegionThe Central Experimental FarmCool! A farm right by the heart of the city. You don't see that every day. That's unless you live in the National Capital Region. Can't decide how to spend and afternoon. Why not pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in a country farm environment. The Central Experimental Farm, run by the Federal Department of Agriculture, has been in operation for more than 100 years and includes more than 365 hectares (900 acres) of farmland for research on plants and animals. Stroll amongst the lovely, Ornamental Flower Gardens or test your knowledge of tree species at the Arboretum. There are over 2 000 different tree varieties so don't be disappointed if you can't name them all. If you wish, check out some farm animals or even enjoy a horse drawn hay ride!
A quick look at this image reveals that not all the fields within the farm have the same appearance. Not only are different plant species investigated, but tilling techniques, herbicides, just about anything having to do with efficient farming. Therefore some fields contain ripened grains, other corn almost ready for harvest. Other fields are just tilled soil possibly waiting for a crop rotation. Just northeast of the farm we can see Dow's Lake. Part of the Rideau Canal system, Dow's Lake was once a swamp but now offers opportunities for paddle-boating or an ideal location to practice competitive rowing. The bright object on the lake is the Dow's Lake pavilion, a must stop location for skaters who wish to enjoy the world's longest skating rink in winter. Winter, let's not think about that just yet, remember, it's July 3rd, (at least that's when this data was acquired), and I feel like a swim in a pristine lake in Gatineau Park.
