A Virtual Tour of Winnipeg and the Beaches

Winnipeg's Meeting Place: The Forks

Since man first inhabited this area people have been gathering at the Forks. At the junction of the north flowing, Red River and the easternly flowing Assiniboine River is the area commonly known as the Forks. This was a meeting place for many First Nations people. Goods were traded, news and stories exchanged. Over time, Europeans settled the area and the City of Winnipeg was eventually born. Today, the Forks is still a meeting place, both for people who live in the area and guests who come to visit.

The Forks

Now, if you've ever been to Winnipeg you'll notice that the buildings aren't all purple (as they appear in this image). Concrete and asphalt reflect highly in the red and infrared and it's this false colour nature of the data that causes this appearance. The bands of data utilized in the generation of this image also cause other features to have a different appearance. A bunch of features in the southeast portion of the image give the appearance of a bunch of bananas. If we compare these yellow patches with the lawns around the Legislature Building we can guess they're grassy fields but just exactly what are they? We'll have to wait for that answer during the Winnipeg tour, since right now I'm looking at the Legislature and wondering about it and the source rock for many other stone buildings in this western city.
