A Virtual Tour of Winnipeg and the BeachesThe Winding Red River. We start our tour of Winnipeg and the Beaches south of Winnipeg on the Red River. The meandering Red gets it's name due to the sediment load it carries as it travels through the prairies. The River looks blue in this scene as a result of the false colour nature of the data used to create this image. You can check out the Landsat explanation for more details.
You might notice that the agricultural fields adjacent to the river are long and narrow. This reflects part of the French culture of the early settlers to the area. Initial colonization allowed for the first inhabitants to secure a portion of shoreline to allow easy access to water supplies for developing agricultural lands. Of course the French weren't the first peoples to inhabit the area. A common meeting place for many indigenous peoples was the Forks, in the heart of Winnipeg.
